My One True Love
February 14th, 2008Today my teacher was mean to me and I got a bit upset. The details are common-place, and quite dull really (I said something he didn’t want to hear, and needless to say, it didn’t go down too well). My lower-lip wobbling, I hurried down the stairs and into the arms of the lovely lovely Hannah. After being duly comforted, I rammed on my headphones and turned on the one song that will never ever fail to make me happy. I know, I know, Bowie’s not as hip as he was. I know he sings slightly flat (and not in the intentional Bob Dylan-way). I know the quality of his work took a murderous turn for the worse around ‘Scary Monsters’. I don’t care though. I don’t care about the ridiculous production on the track. I don’t care about the fact that when he sings ‘I will be King’, I can only picture David in his ‘Labyrinth’ get-up. I don’t care even that the song was butchered in ‘Moulin Rouge’. All I know is that from the searing guitar opening, to Bowie’s half-careless, half-earnest lyrical promises, to the solid standard backbeat on the drums, ‘Heroes’ provides three minutes, and 37 seconds of the best things in the world.
David, come take a bow.
