CSS; Pants!

I’m on a charity buzz this week. There’s much to buzz about, I suppose. I went jumble sailing yesterday, round George Street and up to Capel Street. Then I spotted this lot in my favourite rag. Whilst I’m sure there’s only a relatively limited audience for Adriano’s pants, but they’re bound to be rabid. Bids at the charity auction are currently at 10 pounds sterling. Other highlights are Sir Ian McKellen’s fabulous shoes and a signed script from the Office.

But for music fans there’s only one item (obviously Pete Waterman’s crap donation of a crap cd aside). Go on, reach deep for CSS’s pants.

ps, please note that these are not actually pants, but are in fact vintage fila shorts, signed by the band. But they did belong to Adriano.

“Pete Waterman’s crap CD”? “Stock Aitken Waterman Gold” – “crap”!?? Get your jousting equipment ready – I’ll have at you at dawn! :-)

Pete Waterman is great. Good working class bloke. No bullshit about him. He’s a model train enthusiast. He plugged Susan Cadogan’s “Hurt so Good” in the UK in the mid 70s, thereby helping to popularise reggae in the UK. He was partly responsible for the glorious “Roadblock” prank of 1987. He either produced or co-wrote – sometimes both – “Say I’m Your Number One”, “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)”, “I Heard A Rumour”, “Never Gonna Give You Up”, “This Time I Know It’s For Real”, “The Harder I Try”, “Showing Out”, “Better The Devil You Know” and “Shocked”. At one point six years passed where there was at least one S/A/W single in the Top 75 every week. At their peak, they responded to their detractors by penning a number one hit for Mel and Kim which went “Like us, hate us/ But you’ll never change us/ We ain’t ever gonna be respectable”. Seriously, the S/A/W three CD compilation is frequently brilliant and anyone who thinks otherwise is getting STRUCK OFF MY CHRISTMAS CARD LIST.

Yeah, but in the context of the CHARITY auction, where there’s some pretty special and unique stuff, a cd anyone could buy in any branch of virgin megastore is hardly that exciting. In fact, in that context, its a fucking awful donation- as the current bid of £1 suggests.

On a personal note, I could never imagine sitting down, pressing play, and thinking- “Yeah, I’m glad I bought this album. Hang on this album rocks! S/A/W rock! I am so glad to be listening to this right now! There is nothing better than this!….”

  3. Virgin Megastore no longer exists, so there would be something pretty special about that happening!

  4. I can’t imagine using the phrase “This album rocks!”, at least not in any way that wouldn’t be pejorative. And as for bidding for used women’s knickers online, I certainly won’t be doing that! Again. (Etc etc). :-)

I do hope Pete Waterman has at least signed the sleeve of his comp, mind you.
